Tourism program in Riga
Founded in 1201 by Bishop Albert, Riga is a city with more than 800 years of history, shaped by dramatic events and a rich cultural legacy. Archaeological findings show that the area was already inhabited in the 12th century by local Livs and Curonians, taking advantage of its natural harbor at the mouth of the River Rīdziņa. Over the centuries, Riga became a major trading hub between East and West and was influenced by German merchants, the Hanseatic League, Polish and Swedish rulers, and later the Russian Empire. Today Riga is known as the “Jewel of the Baltics” – a city where medieval heritage coexists with stunning Art Nouveau architecture and a vibrant cultural scene. Participants will enjoy guided tours exploring the city’s most iconic sites, uncovering its layered history and unique atmosphere.
Opera Performance: Cavalleria rusticana & Pagliacci
Two masterpieces of Italian verismo opera come to life on the Riga Opera House stage. Pietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana transports the audience to a Sicilian village, where themes of betrayal and jealousy shatter the idyllic façade of rural life. The story follows Santuzza, a young woman heartbroken by her unfaithful fiancé Turiddu, who has fallen for Lola, the wife of the wealthy Alfio. When Santuzza reveals the truth to Alfio, revenge becomes inevitable. Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, staged at the Latvian National Opera since 2019, intertwines love and betrayal both on and off the stage. The drama reaches its climax when Canio, the leader of a travelling troupe of actors, discovers his wife Nedda’s infidelity. Unable to separate his role from his personal anguish, Canio turns the comedic play into a bloody real-life tragedy before the eyes of the unsuspecting audience.
GALA Night
The Gala will take place at the Culture and Folk Art Centre Mazā Ģilde (Small Guild), an architectural monument located in the very heart of Old Riga by Līvu Square. Built in 1864 after the design of renowned architect Johann Daniel Felsko, the building is a masterpiece of 19th-century neo-Gothic style, richly decorated with stained glass, terracotta mosaics, historic portraits and symbolic details. After a careful restoration at the turn of the millennium, Mazā Ģilde has regained its former splendour and today serves as one of Riga’s most elegant cultural venues, offering a truly unique and historic setting for the Gala.
